Then if possible check the motherboard and PSU for signs of burning or burnt component.

It could even be dust burning if your case has a lot of it. You should try to track the source of this smell, otherwise it would be rather hard to help you. Nothing against the XFX Core 750; it's a fine piece of kit, and it wouldn't be a problem, but a 750 isn't really necessary for an HD6670/6770.
